Newcastle is located at 32.56 South 151.46 East on the eastern coast of Australia at the tip of the Hunter River. What began as a penal colony soon became a leading shipping and commercial port by 1860. Industrialisation increased after iron and steel mills were built in 1915. Newcastle is now the sixth most populated city in Australia and is a very successful commercial centre.
